There is a photograph on the original 1982 Lokale Musik box: Nuremberg in 1945, photographed by d’Alessio. A man stands on a shattered rooftop, looking across a city reduced to masonry and skeletal architecture. It is an unusually severe image for music whose raw material includes village dances, folk tunes and memories of rural Franconia. Yet it makes a certain sense. Walter Zimmermann’s subject here is not pastoral nostalgia. It is the much stranger business of trying to discover what “local” can possibly mean once locality has become contaminated by history, ideology, memory and the observer himself.
