It certainly does not happen too often that looking back at a compositional life’s work is like a journey of discovery into a little-known aesthetic terrain. However, Walter Zimmermann has to be counted among the best known unknowns of the contemporary composition scene. This may be due to the fact that his music was created in a consequent and possibly anti-career independence from the changing currents and fashions of “new music”.
